Amending the Virginia Residential Landlord-Tenant Act Regarding Liability for Bedbug Extermination
An addition to the Virginia Code has caused complications for residential tenants who experience bedbugs in their rental units. A proposed amendment to this law will hold landlords liable for dealing with bedbugs infestations because landlords are in a position that makes them most able to afford treatment. This amendment would also address bedbugs effectively according to scientific research and align with federal housing guidelines
The Technology Students Prefer for Their Learning
The purpose of this action research project was to find out if students want to use technology in their learning and what that looks like. The research question guiding this study was “How do students think technology should be used in their learning?” Technology is in all aspects of our lives, including education. Technology promotes powerful learning experiences for students and teachers. There is an abundant amount of technology options for students to use for their learning. In many instances, the teacher will determine the technology tool or resource that will be used by the students. Students are seldom given an opportunity to choose the technology. By asking students what technology they want to use in their learning, we can better meet their needs and wants regarding technology

Bomb radiocarbon and tag-recapture dating of sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus)
The sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus) was the cornerstone species of western North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico large coastal shark fisheries until 2008 when they
were allocated to a research-only fishery. Despite decades of fishing on this species, important life history
parameters, such as age and growth, have not been well known. Some validated age and growth information exists for sandbar shark, but more comprehensive life history information is needed. The complementary application of bomb radiocarbon and tag-recapture dating was used in this
study to determine valid age-estimation criteria and longevity estimates for this species. These two methods
indicated that current age interpretations based on counts of growth bands in vertebrae are accurate to 10 or 12 years. Beyond these years, we could not determine with certainty when such an underestimation of age begins; however, bomb radiocarbon and tag-recapture data indicated that large adult sharks were considerably older than the estimates derived from counts of growth bands. Three adult sandbar sharks were 20 to 26 years old based on bomb radiocarbon results and were a 5- to 11-year increase over the previous age estimates for these sharks. In support of
these findings, the tag-recapture data provided results that were consistent with bomb radiocarbon dating and
further supported a longevity that exceeds 30 years for this species

Creating a Vision for XYZ Research Corporation: A Case Study
A strategic analysis was developed for XYZ Research Corporation (the true company's name is disguised). The strategic analysis involved a series of visits to the company to conduct focus groups with its employees and management. Five focus groups were carried out at XYZ Research Corporation. This method proved to be effective and valuable when aiming to gather detailed information on the specifics of a firm's operation. Information and insights on the company and its business that would not become evident through any kind of meticulous financial or economic analysis of the company's and industry's numbers - which in fact were unavailable or scarce - was efficiently obtained by personal communication from the employees in the interviews. The focus group and interview method is recommended as a valid alternative to gathering detailed data and information when facing limited availability of reliable quantitative economic data on sales, size, and other information on the industry. The amount and quality of person-to-person information gathered in the interviews made the questionnaire a more powerful tool versus the alternative of simply mailing it. In the process of developing a strategic plan for XYZ, data and information used to write an undergraduate level teaching case study was gathered. The focus group method allowed for digging out intricate functional relationships within the company and between the company and the industry, which allowed for writing a more complete and educationally interesting case study.Focus Groups, Strategic Analysis, Food Safety, Outsourcing, Research Methods/ Statistical Methods, A22, C99, L21, M10,
Industry-Academic Partnerships The View from the Corner Office
Industry-academic partnerships are described and discussed from the perspective of industry. Eight types of partnerships are discussed, including internships, mentoring, site visits, faculty-directed research, student research, consulting, in-class visits, and industry advisory boards. The benefits, problems, costs, motivation to participate, and advice for managing industry-academic partnerships are presented.industry partnerships, industry collaboration, internship, mentor, field trip, consulting, advisory board, Industrial Organization, Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession, Q10, Q16,
Solar generation and storage of O2 (a 1 delta g)
An investigation was performed of the technical steps required to design a solar powered oxygen-iodine laser. Singlet delta oxygen is formed upon transfer of energy from selected photoexcited dye molecules to ground state molecular oxygen and then is concentrated and stored as an endoperoxide by reaction with an aromatic hydrocarbon. The endoperoxide, when heated, releases singlet oxygen in high yield thus providing a regenerable source of laser fuel. Energy transfer from dye molecules to molecular oxygen was investigated. When dye molecules were adsorbed to polymer substrates it was observed that the dye became embedded in the polymer matrix. Porphin dyes were incorporated into films of 1,4-dimethyl-2-poly(vinylnaphthalene), 2PVN. An endoperoxide was formed when porphin-doped 2PVN was exposed to visible radiation. This demonstrates the possibility of generating singlet oxygen using solar energy and concentrating and storing it in one simple step. Transport of energy by exciton migration in polycrystalline dye films was also investigated
